Examining Related Evidence: Lampooning Hoover, 1932
This internet activity is based on the Examining the Evidence feature found on page 773 of The American Pageant, Twelfth Edition. Or you can view the feature here.

The Examining the Evidence box in your text asked you to analyze another cartoon in The American Pageant. To investigate further, use the methods described in your book to examine another Hoover cartoon in the National Archives.

Go to the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library’s site for Presidential Cartoons and scroll down to the bottom of the page to "An awful big contract."

  1. Who are the two figures in the cartoon?
  2. Explain five of the listed items on the contract that Hoover seems to be agreeing to do.
  3. There is no information given about the context of this image: what is your best guess as to the date of this cartoon? Explain your reasoning.
  4. Why does this cartoon seem so ironic today?
