Thinking Critically •
Hypertext: Of Mouse and Man

By Sven Birkerts
guidepost | discussion questions | thinking critically | writing topic

In this piece, Birkerts essentially asks what has become a common question today—are we guiding technology or is it guiding us? He comes to the conclusion that technology is changing us and not vice versa: "The processes that we created to serve our evolving needs have not only begun to redefine our experience, but they are fast becoming our new cognitive paradigm" (paragraph 5). To what extent do you agree or disagree with Birkerts's statement, especially as it relates to the style of such forms of online writing as hypertext?
