Communication: The Nonverbal Agenda. In this film Raymond Birdwhistell describes how nonverbal messages, communicated through posture, gesture, and expression, can be interpreted in terms of meaning. (1974, 30 min.) Available from the Pennsylvania State University, Audio-Visual Services, University Park, PA 16802 (800-826-0132).

Constructing Social Reality. This tape which is part of the Discovering Psychology series, explains how understanding the psychological processes that govern our behavior may help us deal with society. The tape also includes “The Power of the Situation,” which illustrates how situational forces can affect beliefs and behavior. (1990, 2 parts, 30 min. each) Available from Insight Media (1-800-233-9910).

Eye of the Beholder. Illustrates how ambiguous social reality can be for perceivers, and emphasizes the roles of social psychological factors such as the actor-observer difference and confirmation biases in perceivers’ interpretations of that reality. The fact that this film is quite dated adds to its entertainment value without detracting from its educational value, particularly if the instructor prompts students to take a tongue?in?cheek perspective while watching. Impression Formation and Interpersonal Attraction. This film demonstrates the importance of first impressions, central traits, and implicit personality theories as they relate to person perception. The Interpersonal Perception Task. Contains 30 brief scenes showing various common social interactions, each followed by a multiple-choice question relating to the nature of the interaction or the status of the people involved. The tape comes with a printed copy of the questions and the correct answers. An essential exercise for psychology classes and all students of social behavior. (1987, 40 min.) Judgment and Decision Making. This film examines some of the biases and heuristics that influence perception, judgment, decision making, and behavior. Tversky and Kahneman are interviewed and illustrate the availability and representativeness heuristics. (1989, 30 min.) Available from the Annenberg/CPB Project, Intellimation, P.O. Kelley’s Model of Causal Attribution. Explains Kelley’s model of causal attribution by illustrating the effects of consistency, consensus, and distinctiveness to explain why a man trips over his partner’s feet in a dance class. Nonverbal Communication. Researchers in the field of nonverbal communication are interviewed in this film, hosted by Stanley Milgram. Areas covered include interpersonal distance, eye contact, posture, and gesture. Gender differences in perceiving and understanding nonverbal behavior are also discussed. (1975, 24 min.) Paralanguage and Proxemics. This film shows how voice quality, rate and volume of speech, word emphasis, inflection, and tone can change the meaning of words. It also examines spatial relationships in various communication systems. (1986, 28 min.) Available from Insight Media (1-800-233-9910).

Productivity and the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: The Pygmalion Effect. This film presents examples of several situations showing how people’s expectations influence others’ behavior. (1975, 28 min.) Available from CRM-McGraw-Hill, Box 641, Del Mar, CA 90214.

What do you see? Giving Stereotypes a Second Look. Addressing different motivations for stereotyping, this video presents a group of students sharing their experiences with stereotyping. (1999, 28 min) Available from Insight Media (1-800-233-9910).
