State court judges received a salary increase from the 77th Legislature; however, Governor Perry vetoed the pay raise. This action left pay levels the same as in 1999 for district and appellate court judges. An upward salary adjustment as high as 10 per cent will be made in 2004 if the state has additional revenue available. Comptroller Carole Keeton Rylander's warning that the 78th Legislature (meeting in 2003) would likely face a $5 billion shortfall in available funds makes this judicial pay raise seem improbable.
