After Governor George W. Bush was elected U.S. president in 2000, Lieutenant Governor Rick Perry succeeded him. Subsequently, the Texas Senate elected Senator Bill Ratliff (R-Mount Pleasant) as acting lieutenant governor to serve until January 2003.
