The NAACP fought for hate crimes legislation during the regular session of the 77th Legislature. This law enhances penalties for crimes based on race, color, disability, religion, national origin, sex, or sexual preferences. In the same session, several Latino-based organizations (including the William c. Velasquez Institute of San Antonio) were actively involved in attempts to influence redistricting for U.S. representatives and state legislators.
