In 2000, Texas governor George W. Bush was elected president. Upon Bush's resignation from the governorship, Lieutenant Governor Rick Perry succeeded to the office. Texas Democrats maintained a majority in the Texas House or Representatives and Texas Republicans kept control of the Texas Senate.
