This 30-minute video discusses strategies to help students gain control of their finances and overcome money problems. Viewers are given testimony from other students on their own financial success and disasters in college. Advice is also given by professional financial advisor Ann Egan, who discusses income and expenses and examines the general principles of budgeting and cash flow. Students are encouraged to be honest about their finances as they learn to develop the skills of good money management, including the pitfalls of credit card spending and the possibilities for financial aid.

This Instructor's Resource Material includes:
  1. Exercises and Discussion Points
  2. Where Does All the Money Go?
  3. The Monthly Budget
  4. The Long-Term Budget
  5. Web Resources
Exercises and Discussion Points are intended to engage your students in the information presented in the video, and encourage them to become actively involved in their finances while in college. Strongly encourage your students to conduct their own research using the Resources included here. If your campus has a financial advising office, encourage your students to visit. There they can talk to a professional advisor, who can give them personal advice on ways to manage their budgets, and can also give them share with them additional financial resources that they can use.

Three budgeting exercises are included here: 1) Where does all the money go?, 2) The Monthly Budget, and 3) The Long-Term Budget. These three exercises should be completed in order, as the results from one exercise will factor in to the next. You can print these exercises out and distribute them in hardcopy. However, if you have the capability, it is preferable that you forward the electronic files to each student or post on your course website, as the budgeting forms included with each exercise can be opened in to Excel. Instructions on opening and using the forms in Excel are included with each exercise. These exercises are available on our own website at http://studentsuccess.college.hmco.com.

Money and Finances has a running time of 30 minutes, and is closed-captioned. It is available free to all classrooms using a Houghton Mifflin text. To order this video, contact Faculty Services at 1-800-733-1717, or contact your Houghton Mifflin Sales Representative.
