- CIA Factbook: This is one of the best online sources for basic information about different countries. Information is provided in a consistent format for each country, making comparisons easy and informational. It also is updated frequently, making it a good overall tool for current data.
- Nation by Nation Almanac: This website is run by the Multimedia History Company and provides data by country in a variety of areas, including government, human rights, geography, history, and news.
- Infoplease Countries of the World: Infoplease.com's website includes country profiles that provide information on geography, maps, flag, history, current ruler, area, population, capital and largest cities, languages, ethnicity/race, religion, literacy rate, economy, and government.
- World Bank Counties and Regions: Like the CIA Factbook website, this page provides up-to-date country profiles of most of the world's countries, and also information organized by region. Although news stories about World Bank are interspersed with the data, the reference information is useful for a quick "country-at-a-glance" profile.
- The Lonely Planet: This popular series of guidebooks offers an online resource with similar information to the printed books. You can explore by region, by country, and in some cases, city. Each country page contains useful information for the traveler in a variety of areas, including demographic and historical information.
