Numeri ordinali

A. Ordinal numbers from first to tenth have forms that need to be memorized. To form ordinal numbers from eleventh on, the ending -esimo is added to the cardinal number after dropping the final vowel. Exception: Numbers ending in tré retain the final e (without the accent).

B. Ordinal numbers agree in gender and number with the nouns they modify. They precede the noun except when used with the names of monarchs and popes. In writing, ordinal numbers may be expressed as Roman or Arabic numerals.

Il mio compleanno è il 1º [primo] luglio.
My birthday is July 1st.

La nostra è la quinta casa sulla destra.
Our house is the fifth on the right.

Oggi è il cinquantesimo anniversario della nostra associazione.
Today is the 50th anniversary of our association.

Elisabetta II^a è la regina d'Inghilterra.
Elizabeth the Second is the queen of England.

C. Ennesimo means to the nth degree or umpteenth.
Era l'ennesima volta che ha detto che veniva e non si è fatto vedere.
It was the umpteenth time he said he was coming and then didn't show up.
