Avverbi di negazione

Negative adverbs negate the action or assertion expressed by the verb.

non… affatto	not at all
non… ancora	not yet
non… mai	never
non…	neanche not even
non… nemmeno	not even
non… neppure	not even
non… nessuno	nobody, no one*
non… niente	nothing**
non… nulla	nothing
non… più	no longer, not anymore
né… né	neither . . . nor

*Nessuno used as an adjective means no, none, not any. When it is used as a subject, non is omitted: Nessuno ha risposto.
**When niente is used as a subject, non is omitted: Niente è impossibile.

A. Non always precedes the verb. The other negative word usually follows the verb.
Non vado mai al ristorante anche se sarebbe molto bello andarci.
I never go to restaurants even though it would be really nice to go.

B. When the other negative term precedes the verb for emphasis, non is omitted. 
Mai mangiamo il pesce crudo. 
We never eat raw fish.

C. In compound tenses, the negative expression is usually placed between the auxiliary verb and the past participle.
Non hanno ancora comprato il vino per la festa.
They still haven't bought the wine for the party.

Nessuno and niente / nulla, however, follow the past participle.

Non ho visto nessuno che conosco al bar.
I didn't see anyone I know at the bar.

Non abbiamo fatto niente / nulla di particolare.
We didn't do anything in particular.
