I. Aggettivi interrogativi

Italian has three interrogative adjectives: quale, che, and quanto. All three precede the noun to which they refer.

A. Quale is variable; it changes form depending on whether the noun is singular or plural. Quale means which? or what? and is used in questions that offer a choice.
Quale cantante preferisci?
Quali progetti ha Vasco Rossi per il futuro?

In its singular form, quale contracts before third-person forms of essere.
Qual è il tuo cantante preferito?

B. Che is invariable and can be used with singular or plural nouns. Che serves the same function as quale, and is increasingly preferred to quale in spoken Italian. It is usually used in questions requesting specific information.
Che ore sono?
Che strumento suona Lucio Dalla?

C. As an interrogative adjective, quanto means how much? in the singular and how many? in the plural, and is variable in gender and number. Quanto is used in questions about the quantity of the noun it modifies.
Quanto tempo dura la tournée?
Quanti concerti faranno?

II. Pronomi interrogativi

The interrogative pronouns chi, che, quale/i, and quanto are used in questions about the identity, nature, or quantity of something or someone.

A. Chi is the only interrogative form that is used exclusively as a pronoun. It refers only to people and means who? Chi takes the singular form of the verb.

B. Che refers to things and means what? or what things? In spoken Italian, che is usually followed by cosa to form the question che cosa?*

*Cosa can also be used alone to form a question: Cosa vuoi dire? (What do you mean?)

C. Quale is invariable in gender but has singular and plural forms. Applicable to both people and things, quale is usually used to inquire about a choice between alternatives. Quale is also used in preference to che when requesting addresses, phone numbers, and the like.

III. Avverbi interrogativi

The interrogative adverbs are come, dove, quando, quanto, and perché. All are invariable, but come and dove elide before the verb essere.

• Come is used to ask how?
  Come si suona la chitarra?
  
• Dove is used to ask where?
  Dov'è lo stadio?
  
• Quando is used to ask when?
  Quando è il concerto?
  
• Quanto is used to ask how much?
  Quanto costano i biglietti?
  
• Perché is used to ask why?
  Perché non mi accompagni stasera?
