Chapter 28: Modern Consciousness
The Mind of Man- Freud's investigation of the human mind involved a fundamental tension. He used the tools of the rational scientist to study human irrationality. Moreover, like many thinkers of his generation, he believed that the irrational dominated human consciousness. Reread Freud's comments on instinct and intellect on page 703 and on civilization on pages 704 and 705. When you're done, write on short essay on Freud's views on efforts to control humans' irrational nature. Be sure place Freud's ideas in their larger intellectual context.
