Chapter 16: The Rise of Sovereignty

The Consolidation of Power
  1. Under Louis XIV, the French monarchy reached its zenith. Louis had more personal power, commanded more powerful armies, and presided over a larger administrative apparatus than any monarch before him. Examine the photograph of the Hall of Mirrors in the French royal palace at Versailles on page 389. When you're done, write a short report from the point of view of an ambassador to the court of Louis XIV. What impresses you the most? What must you do to gain the attention of the king? What flaws, if any, do you notice in Louis' policies?
