Chapter 14: The Reformation

Salvation by Faith Alone
  1. Luther's call for reform may have been sparked by church corruption, but its implications went far beyond the need to curtail the unsavory activities of a few dishonest church officials. Luther's rejection of salvation through good works struck at the heart of the church's relationship with the laity. If Luther was right, priests had no essential role to play in the salvation of believers. Reexamine the engraving showing the selling of indulgences and the passage from Luther's Ninety-five Theses on page 330. When you're finished, write a short essay explaining the implications of Luther's concept of salvation by faith alone. In your essay, be sure to discuss possible explanations for the mass appeal of his ideas.
