Chapter 11: The Flowering of Medieval Culture

Athens and Jerusalem
  1. The rediscovery of Aristotle's philosophy had a profound effect on European philosophy and theology. For some medieval scholars and theologians, ancient philosophy offered new roads to truth. For others, Greek philosophy represented a direct challenge to the Christianity. Reread the excerpts from the writings of Bernard of Clairvaux on page 266 and from those of Peter Abelard on page 267. When you're done, create a short dialogue between the two men in which they debate the place of philosophy in the resolution of religious questions. Be sure to consider each man's attitude towards the sources of religious authority as you construct your dialogue.
