Chapter 6: The Roman Republic
Ambition and Empire - The last decades of the Republic were years of political, social, and economic crisis. In an atmosphere charged by war, poverty, and corruption, ambitious men vied for control of Rome. Reread the excerpts from Sallust's The Conspiracy of Catiline on page 133 and Cicero's De Officiis on page 137. When you are finished, write a short essay from the point of view of either a defender or opponent of Julius Caesar. What arguments might a defender of Caesar have employed in support of his actions? What republican virtues might an opponent accuse Caesar of betraying?
