Chapter 2: The Hebrews
God's Law and the Hebrew People- The Hebrews believed that they had a special role to play in world history. God's covenant with the Hebrews had made them his "chosen people," recipients of his special protection as long as they upheld his Law. Reread the excerpt from Exodus on page 41, the excerpts from Exodus, Deuteronomy, Leviticus, and Proverbs on page 43, and the words of the prophet Amos on pages 44 and 45. With these texts in mind, write a letter from a Hebrew parent to his or her child in which the parent offers the child advice on how to best uphold God's Law. Be sure to consider the following questions as you write your letter. How did the Hebrew's understanding of God's Law differ from the obligations of other Near Eastern peoples to their gods? In the Hebrew's view, what did a person need to do in order to be righteous in the sight of God? Did Hebrew men and women have different roles and responsibilities in this context?
