St. Bartholomew's Day
From Dubois, François. "St Bartholomew's Day Massacre." Oil on canvas. Ca. 1572. Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne.
One Huguenot who survived the massacre on St. Bartholomew's Day in France painted this graphic depiction of the chaos and the bloodshed. Part of the slaughter of Protestants involved the mutilation of their corpses, severing heads from their bodies, in order to cleanse the polluted community of heretics. Following such scenes of brutality, the remaining French Protestant vowed never again to trust Catholics who seemed similarly unwilling to attempt a reconciliation.
