Unit 6: Late Middle Ages / Black Death
An Image of Death
From "The Triumph of Death." Woodcut. Ca. 1400. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

The print is dominated by the skeletal figure of death brandishing a scythe riding on top of a casket. Underneath the casket all classes of society fall victim to death, including peasants, women, a child, a knight, a king, and even a pope still wearing his tiara. In the background the souls of the dead are guided to heaven by angels on the right or carried to hell on the left.
