Chapter 17: Manifest Destiny and Its Legacy, 1841 - 1848

  • Discuss whether the Mexican War would have happened without the annexation of Texas.

  • Focus on the Manifest Destiny campaign of 1844. Discuss whether Polk had a mandate for expansionism and, if so, whether he successfully fulfilled the American majoritys goals in the West. If Clay had been elected in 1844, would America have expanded in the same manner?

  • Use Lincolns spot resolutions or Thoreaus Civil Disobedience essay to highlight the opposition to the war, particularly the charge that Polk had maneuvered to bring on the fighting.

  • Consider the Mexican War from a Mexican perspective. Discuss the long-term consequences of acquiring the Spanish borderlands for both Mexicans and Americans.

  • Why was the United States able to expand without European intervention? Also, why was Mexico unable to gain the support of either France or Britain in defending its territories? Why did France and Britain remain uninvolved during the Mexican War?
