Makers of America: Class discussion and exercises
Makers Of America: The French
Chapter 6:
The Duel for North America, 1608 - 1763
Questions for Class Discussion
- How did the eighteenth-century British
conquest of New France permanently affect the French experience in America?
- What differences and similarities exist
between the two main concentrations of Franco-Americans: the Cajuns of Louisiana
and the migrants from Quebec in New England?
Suggested Student Exercises
- Use maps of the MissouriMississippi
River system and their tributaries to find French or Cajun place names and
identify patterns of French exploration or settlement within the present United
States. Consider the long-term effects of the early French empire on later
American communities. (Louisiana is a particularly good focus for such examination,
but other places such as Detroit, St. Louis, or Vincennes, Indiana might also
be studied.)
- Investigate the contemporary descendants
of the French settlers in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada. Consider the importance
of French as one of Canadas two official languages, and the tensions
that still remain between English and French-speaking Canadians. Trace the
migration of French Canadians into New England and elsewhere since the late
nineteenth century.
