Look at the line graph titled "Immigration to the United States, 1870-1930" on page 654 of the text. After studying the graph, you should be able to answer the following questions:
  1. During which years did the United States receive the greatest number of immigrants? Was there any year in which more than 1 million persons arrived?
  2. During the peak period of immigration, were the majority of newcomers from Western and Northern Europe or from Southern and Eastern Europe?
  3. Just from looking at the graph, can you tell what impact the Immigration Act of 1921 had on how many immigrants arrived and where they came from?
  4. What were the effects of major economic depressions in the United States (1873-1879, 1893-1897) and of World War I (1914-1918) on immigration to this country?
