Skill Building: Graphs
Chapter 19: Immigration, Urbanization, and Everyday Life, 1860-1900

After looking carefully at the line graph titled "The Changing Face of U.S. Immigration, 1865-1920" on page 578 of the textbook, you should be able to answer the following questions:
  1. In which years did overall immigration to the United States exceed 1 million?
  2. In which periods did overall immigration to the United States drop significantly? From your knowledge of American history, can you account for this? Were things happening in this country during those periods that might have discouraged immigrants from coming?
  3. Where did the so-called old immigrants come from? During which years did this old immigration peak?
  4. Where did the new immigrants come from? During which years did the new immigration peak? Did the numbers of new immigrants arriving during their peak years exceed the numbers of old immigrants arriving during their peak period?
  5. During which years did Asian immigration to the United States hover close to zero? Can you account for this from your knowledge of American history?
