Skill Building: Graphs
Chapter 4: The Bonds of Empire, 1660-1750

Look at the pie graph titled "Distribution of Non-Indian Nationalities Within the British Mainland Colonies, 1700-1755" on page 99 of the text. It visually presents important demographic data about the British mainland colonies. Was the population of the British mainland colonies more ethnically and racially diverse in the seventeenth or the eighteenth century? How might these demographic shifts affect Britain's relationship with its mainland colonies? By 1755 which group made up roughly one-fifth of the population? How do you account for the growth of that group between 1700 and 1755? For comparison, find out what portion of today's total U.S. population that group makes up.
