Chapter 19: Political Stalemate And Political Upheaval, 1868 - 1900

After reading this chapter, you should be able to do the following:

  1. Understand people’s expectations about the role of parties in the politics of the Gilded Age and the choices political parties offered voters.

  2. Explain how the stalemate that deadlocked politics from 1874 into the 1890s constrained both parties from enacting their proposals.

  3. Analyze why farmers chose to take political action outside the major parties and what they expected to accomplish. Describe the immediate outcome.

  4. Evaluate the choices farmers faced in the 1896 presidential election and explain the long-term outcomes of that election.
