After reading this chapter, you should be able to do the following:

  1. Discuss the expectations that led to federal policymakers’ choices regarding Native Americans after the Civil War and the ways in which western Native Americans chose to respond.

  2. Analyze how Mormons, the range cattle industry, and farmers responded to the constraints they faced in the West and the outcomes of their choices for western development.

  3. Explain how choices regarding railroads, mining, agribusiness, finance capitalism, and water promoted the development of the West.

  4. Evaluate the constraints faced by Native Americans, Mexican Americans, and Chinese immigrants between the mid-nineteenth century and 1900, and the choices that each made.
