(1944- ), baseball player. Carlton became the first and only left-handed pitcher to win four Cy Young Awards and to surpass three thousand strikeouts in a career. Winning over three hundred games while playing mostly for the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies, he amassed over four thousand strikeouts, placing him second on the all-time major league list.
