Activity 1: Ridges, Isochrons, and Oceanic Crust
This activity deals with the midocean ridge system, a portion of the globe that only a few hundred or perhaps a few thousand people will visit. Even those who visit this region will have only a very limited field of view. This link connects to a Web animation that shows a three-dimensional view of the axial valley of the midocean ridge. It was created using actual bathymetry data from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The site is from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
