particle size:<0.0039 mm
description:Fine-grained detrital rock resulting from the compaction of mud with minor amounts clay and/or silt; lacks bedding planes and is massive; on fracture, mudstone breaks into blocky pieces; similar to shale in terms of particle size but distinguished from it by fracture; although fractures like siltstone, distinguished from the latter by smaller sediment size; typically the mud is made of clay minerals and mica; forms approximately half of all sedimentary rocks.
