Chapter 11: Tone and Style

  1. Choose one vintage and one current travel poster from the websites below or another website with travel posters. (Right-click on the poster and choose "copy" to copy it into your word processing program.) Write a travel article about each destination, adopting a style and tone based on the poster you choose. (Do some basic research on your destination on the Web if you need information for your article.) Give your article a design that matches its style and tone.

  2. Analyze the style and tone of two or three different online travel guides, such as: Lonely Planet
    http://www.lonelyplanet.com

    Fodors
    http://www.fodors.com

    Frommers
    http://www.frommers.com

    Rough Guides

Write a brief description of each guide's tone and style. If you notice a difference between them, explain what you think accounts for that difference. Also critique the site's design—is it appropriate for the style and tone of the writing? Why or why not?
