Image Gallery Activities Chapter 7: Argument
- Choose four editorial cartoons from the Cagle Slate website:
http://cagle.slate.msn.com
Copy each cartoon into your word processing program by right-clicking over the cartoon, selecting "copy" (Windows systems), and pasting the image into your word processing document.
Write a paragraph about each cartoon, comparing it to the characteristics of a formal argument described in Chapter 7. Does the cartoon focus on a subject that can be debated? Does it present facts or evidence? Does it consider the opposition? Does it exhibit any of the signs of an unfair argument described in the text (distortion, slanting, quoting out of context)? How is an editorial cartoon similar to or inherently different from a written editorial?
- Choose four movie posters from one of the following websites:
The Nostalgia Factory http://www.nostalgia.com
Rick's Movie Graphics http://www.ricksmovie.com
Copy each poster into your word processing program by right-clicking over the image, selecting "copy" (Windows systems), and pasting the image into your word processing document.
Describe the message or image each poster is attempting to convey. Then, explain in detail how you could turn the poster into a political satire like the spoof posters in the Chapter 7 Image Gallery. Would your spoof use similar methods of argument or persuasion as the real poster?
