Chapter 5: Designing

  1. Read this article on poor website design by USA Today writer Sam Vincent Meddis:

    http://www.usatoday.com/tech/columnist/ccsam004.htm

Now critique the usatoday.com website against the Meddis article. What does the USA Today website emphasize: substance or "marketing buzz"? What about the page with Meddis's article?

  2. Read this article on "information pollution" by Jakob Nielsen, a.k.a. "the king of usability":

    http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20030811.html

How do you think Michael Rock would respond to this article and to the design of Nielsen's site? Do you think the Nielsen site is effective? Why or why not?

  3. Compare several print publications with their respective online versions (for example, the USA Today newspaper and http://www.usatoday.com/, Time magazine and http://www.time.com/, The Atlantic Monthly magazine and http://www.theatlantic.com/ ).

For each publication, consider how the design of its website differs from the design of its print version. Which is more informative? Which is easier to use? Does the design of the print version drive the design of the website, or vice versa?
