Chapter 3: Drafting

  1. Of the two styles of drafting illustrated by the Chapter 3 Image Gallery, which do you believe is most common? Why? Which style is closest to your own style of drafting? Does your choice of writing tool affect your drafting style (see Chapter 1 Image Gallery)? In what way?

  2. Browse through the images of Walt Whitman's draft manuscripts of "Song of Myself" at http://bailiwick.lib.uiowa.edu/whitman/ You can move through the manuscript using the Previous and Next buttons at the bottom of each page, or by using the links in the left frame. The page that begins "With tremendous breath" marks the beginning of a passage with considerable corrections.

Had Whitman had a word processor available for drafting, do you think he would have used it? Why or why not? What are some advantages and disadvantages to drafting on computer versus drafting on paper?
