End-of-Chapter Activities
Chapter 15

  1. Write an essay in which you compare and contrast the process of writing a research paper with the process of writing an exam essay. What is different about the two processes? What do the two processes have in common? Write the essay in one sitting, in twenty minutes or less (time yourself).

  2. Make a list of six potential research paper topics, using a Web directory such as the Google Directory (not the Google search engine) to suggest possible subjects. Choose each topic from a different main category in the directory (Arts, Business, Computers, Science, Society, etc.). You can choose from the topics you selected for the Chapter 12 activities if you like.

Now write a possible thesis statement for each topic, based on your own current knowledge of that topic. Next, recast each thesis as an essay exam question. That is, take the role of a college professor, and formulate an essay exam question based on each possible thesis. What does the difference between your potential thesis statements and the exam questions they inspire suggest about the difference between a research paper and an exam essay?
