Chapter 12: Planning the Research Paper

  1. Make a list of ten potential research paper topics, using a Web directory such as the Google Directory (not the Google search engine) to suggest possible subjects. Choose each topic from a different main category in the directory (Arts, Business, Computers, Science, Society, etc.). Then, for each topic, indicate whether you would most likely write a survey or an argument paper on that topic, and why. In addition, state why you think each topic would yield a successful research paper based on the criteria listed on pages 321-323 of your textbook.

  2. Find two sources—one electronic and one print—for one of the topics you selected in Activity 1. Then try the two different note-taking methods described in Chapter 12—using note cards and using a computer—for each source. Do you prefer one note-taking process over the other? Does it make a difference what type of source material you are using (print or electronic)? List the advantages of each note-taking method.
