End-of-Chapter Activities Chapter 5: Designing
- Using the principles of design discussed in Chapter 5 as your guide, look for three websites and/or magazine articles that are examples of bad design. Consider elements such as uniformity, discord, and contrast (see pages 105-106 and 112-113) and proximity, alignment, repetition, and contrast (page 114). Write a detailed critique of each site or article, and include a printout or photocopy for reference. For each example, describe in detail how you would rectify its design errors.
- Respond to this statement on Jakob Nielsen's website: "anything that is a great print design is likely to be a lousy web design" (from this web site). Do you agree or disagree? Why?
- Browse the newspaper designs on the Society for News Design website: http://www.newspagedesigner.com/portfolios/user_list.php
Pick out three designs that you find particularly strong, and explain in a paragraph or two why you think the designs work. Print out your selections for reference. Then exchange your selections with two or three classmates and see if you agree with their selections and if they agree with yours. To what extent is "good design" subjective?
