End-of-Chapter Activities
Chapter 1: Toward Purposeful Writing

  1. Reread "Working Within the Process" on pages 7-9 of Chapter 1. Think about writing assignments you have completed in the past. Where has the task of designing generally fallen within your own writing process? Respond to the statement by designer Paul Rand that "Design . . . is the beginning as well as the end, the process and the product of the imagination." Is this true for you? Why or why not? Now that you've read Chapter 1, will you fit designing into your writing process differently? Interview several classmates or people you know who write as part of their job, and ask them how designing fits into their writing process.

  2. Consider the effect of design on purpose, and vice versa. Does this effect vary depending on the medium (print document or website)? Choose two print documents (for example, a book and a newspaper or magazine article) and two websites, and analyze them with this question in mind. Did the purpose influence the design? Did the design influence the purpose?
