How to Use KeyTabs

KeyTabs® let you personalize the handbook to fit your needs.

Unique, custom-fit KeyTabs® allow you to personalize your Keys handbook. These tabbed cards are movable bookmarks designed to let you return quickly to the places you look up most often. They are also handy notecards and "margin space." They provide additional space for times when you need to add your own example, make a note, or jot down a question about something in the handbook.

To use a KeyTab®, simply

  • Take a KeyTab® from the back of the book when you find information that is particularly helpful or when you wish to make a note;
  • Insert the KeyTab® into the binding at the place you wish to mark, with the tab extending above the top trim of the book, bookmark style;
  • Write the topic at the top of the card.
  • Cards can be moved as needs change.

In a nationwide survey of students using Keys for Writers, we asked students how they used KeyTabs®. Here were some of the many answers we received:

  • To write down assignments given in class
  • To take notes for tests
  • To summarize the main point of a lesson
  • To get back to common errors
  • To add punctuation examples from my own work
  • To copy down all the different page numbers listed in index for a particular subject

In all cases, students were resourceful in using KeyTabs® to make the handbook their own and to find needed information more quickly and easily. Feel free to use KeyTabs® in the ways listed above and in other ways of your own invention.

Additional KeyTabs® are available in packages of five.
