Abbreviations: Titles with People's Names

Abbreviate titles used with people's names.

Use an abbreviation, followed by a period for titles before or after names.

Titles Before Names Titles After Names
Mr. Dr. Sr. M.D.
Ms. Gen. Jr. D.D.S.
Mrs. Sen. Ph.D. B.A.
Prof.      

Note:  Miss is not an abbreviation.

Do not use a title both before and after the name.

  Example Dr. Benjamin Spock

Benjamin Spock, M.D.

Do not abbreviate a title if it is not attached to a name.

  Faulty    He went to the dr. twice last week.
  Revised    He went to the doctor twice last week.
