American Literature, Fifth Edition
Elizabeth Sowle Bradford
Elizabeth Bradford was born to a Quaker printer in London, and she
married her father’s apprentice, William Bradford, in 1685, the same year the
couple set off for Philadelphia. She eventually settled with William in New
York, where they established a thriving printing business. When they printed an
edition of War with the Devil (1707) by Baptist minister Benjamin Keach,
both Bradfords contributed poems to the volume. Elizabeth Bradford’s poem
can be found in the Heath Anthology.
