Chapter Five Activity: Creating an Internet-Ready Resume

In this activity you will rewrite two resumes for electronic distribution and convert them from Microsoft Word documents into ASCII and HTML formats, for dissemination by e-mail or posting on the Web.

To complete the exercise, use resume 1 and resume 2 (provided as Microsoft Word documents).

  1. Go to http://www.job-hunt.org/internetresume.shtml
  2. Follow the Cyber-safe resume and Keywords in your resume links and read the information provided. Following the instructions on these two pages, modify the first resume as necessary to make it cyber safe and search-engine ready.
  3. Follow the Converting a Word document to ASCII text link, and convert the first resume as instructed. Be sure to "polish" your ASCII resume, too, as recommended by the site. Compare your finished ASCII resume with the sample.
  4. Save a copy of your ASCII resume for use in creating an HTML resume.
  5. Click on the Personal Resume Web Page link and follow the instructions for producing an HTML resume. Use a simple text editor like Notepad, or work in a word processor like Microsoft Word or WordPerfect and specify Web page or HTML as the file type when you save your document. Make sure your file has the extension .htm or .html.
  6. Experiment with bold and italic typefaces and different type sizes for different elements of your resume. Add meta tags to your document to maximize search engine placement of your online resume.
  7. View your HTML resume in a Web browser. (Instructions for viewing the resume without going online are provided on the site.)
  8. Repeat the exercise with the second resume. Then make electronic versions of your own resume.
