This site provides extensive information about the history of computers and computing. Particularly useful is the Timeline, which covers 1945-1990 and includes text and images. Taking a look at various years through the time line is especially useful if you are thinking about the metaphors that we use today to describe computers and their applications (the "Web," for example).
