Chapter 7: Using Technology to Develop Listening and Speaking Abilities

The advent of computer projectors and ways to connect computers to large television sets made large group electronic presentations possible for both teachers and students. Your encouragement of numerous student presentations and your introduction of effective listening and speaking strategies will create a supportive climate for students. Both live and electronically recorded speaking opportunities create occasions for students to develop before, during, and after strategies for active listening.

The Listening-Thinking Activity (LTA) is one strategy you can use to practice DRTA behaviors and encourage effective listening at the same time. You encourage the development of effective speaking through dramatic play, creative drama, Readers' Theatre, storytelling, digital storytelling, plays, and other acting experiences. You can foster effective speaking in students through giving them presentation tips as well as teaching them to use electronic presentation software effectively.
