Chapter 6: Using Technology to Develop Writing Abilities

Thousands of pre-schoolers are now developing rudimentary keyboarding skills, but at every school grade level it is important to help students correctly master the alphabet keys as well as the function and other keys on a keyboard. If keyboarding skills are left unattended, students will develop poor keyboarding skills. Effectively using a computer it much too important a skill to ignore in today's technology-driven society.

The writing process approach is used widely in schools, and students are introduced to prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing from early on. Instead of using only pencils and pens to write words, today's students are using computer applications that allow them to create verbal and non-verbal electronic products to share with others. Strategies such as creating storyboards and developing spelling consciousness can be introduced during writing process approach instruction. E-mail is a relatively recent informal method that students use for communicating, but many other online opportunities to communicate are possible, including creating reports and reviews, combining verbal and visual messages through online electronic cards, creating e-zines, and engaging in many other kinds of writing activities.
