LESSON WEB SITES

Academy Curricular Exchange—Language Arts Lessons—Elementary (K-5)
A variety of clever ideas for language arts activities are available at this site. The "Using popcorn to create a reading book" activity is tastefully done.

Alfy
The site offers teachers an "Activity Center," dozens of ideas for Internet-based lessons, a web-linked activity section, and a compilation of age-appropriate lesson plans.

CNN.com—Video
Watch video clips of several major events (e.g., Mt. St. Helens, Hubble telescope, and earthquakes) from 1980 to the 1997. You can click on current stories, also. Students can use this site for making reports and finding video clips to include in reports.

Collaborative Lesson Archive
This site contains, by grade level, lessons that help students work collaboratively.

FoxKids.com
Games and information about the Fox network are located at this site. Students can make a report about TV shows that will be on for a given day and discuss whether or not they plan to watch any of the shows–and why.

Joan Irvine ("The Pop-up Lady")
At this web site are step-by-step directions for making a mouth pop-up book. Ask a group of students to make some and teach the whole class how to make pop-up books.

Bigchalk HomeworkCentral
Links to over 14,000 lesson plans, including language arts plans, are found at this site.

Lesson Plans
This site offers a compilation of Internet sites that offer lesson and unit plans.

The Lesson Plans Page—Language Arts
You can search for lessons by grade level or by using a site search engine.

Looney Tunesville
There are cartoons, games, and activities here with Bugs and his friends. Have students choose an activity and do it, or have them tell others how to do it. Students can write clear directions on a word processor so anyone in the class can follow their directions.

Microsoft Lesson Connection
This site has a search engine that enables you to locate lessons by subject and grade level. The lessons often reference print, CD-ROM materials, and Internet sites.

Newsweek.com
Use this and similar sites to learn about current events. Ask a student to log on and give an oral report to the class about the top story of the day–live from the web site.

Sports Illustrated for Kids
Students can write about sports pictures (Funny Photo), answer questions (Sports Advice), vote (Poll), tell jokes (Laugh Locker), and see as well as hear Buzz Beamer's Animated Adventures (by Bill Hinds). This site has some of the best interactive animated stories on the Web. Students can click on objects that then become animated. Ask students to vote for their favorite story, making a database listing the stories in order to keep track of the votes.

Sunshine Online
Lesson plans, themes, activity sheets, and much more are found at this New Zealand site.

Teachers.net Lesson Bank—Lesson Plan Request Board
Use this site to get help when you are planning lessons, units, and themes.

Sites For Teachers
This is a site with an extensive list of language arts lesson plans.
