Chapter 15: Understanding And Using Standardized Tests

  1. Observe the administration of a standardized test. Describe the atmosphere of the room. Describe how the teacher administers the test. Does the teacher read directly from the administration manual or does he/she improvise? How do the students act during the test? Do they seem nervous and anxious or laid back? How does the teacher respond to these student behaviors? How much time is allotted for the test? Do most students finish? For those who don't finish, are they given an opportunity to finish the test later? Based on this observation, what is your opinion of standardized testing? Do the ends justify the means?

  2. High stakes testing has become commonplace in education. Is the teacher in support of high stakes testing? Why or why not? Ask the teacher to provide examples of how high stakes testing personally affects his/her job, teaching, and/or students. What, if anything, has the teacher done to try to reduce the anxiety and pressure that is associated with high stakes testing?
