Site Observations Chapter 12: Motivation
- According to Maslow's theory, students must satisfy a number of lower needs before they can address self-actualization needs. Based on your observations, describe some instances where students were struggling with their lower needs. Were the students able to reduce or remove the need and become more motivated to learn? Talk to the teacher about his/her experiences with students who are struggling with lower needs. What does the teacher see as his/her role in helping students meet these needs?
- If possible, talk to students individually about the role they play in the classroom. Ask them about their favorite and least favorite activities as well as what school-related activities they are best at. Ask the students to explain why they are better/worse at certain activities. Consider the following questions: (1) Why do students like certain aspects of school better than others? (2) What type of attributions do students make about their abilities? (3) What do your findings have to offer you as a future teacher?
