Chapter 5: Addressing Cultural And Socioeconomic Diversity

  1. Interview the teacher about student diversity. Ask the teacher what types of differences he/she believes exist among the students in the classroom. Discuss the types of issues that these differences raise and how the teacher addresses some of these issues. Find out what issues the teacher struggles with the most or is currently struggling to address. Find out what resources are available to this teacher for addressing issues of student diversity.

  2. While observing, take note of any instances in which the teacher attempts to get students to interact with and understand each other better. For example, does the teacher break students into small groups or assign students a partner for class activities? Also, document any instances where the teacher addresses issues of diversity through multicultural teaching. What are some benefits and limitations of these approaches for the classroom community?
