- Discuss examples of how standardized achievement and aptitude test results can be used in positive ways for program development. Also, discuss how tests that reflect differences among students can be used in negative ways. What can you do to ensure that you and the school you work for both use test results appropriately?
- What type of information is necessary to learn in order to be an "informed consumer" of standardized tests? What criteria should you use to determine the quality of a standardized test? Where can you find information about these criteria for any specific test?
- Some people have argued that standardized tests are biased and have advocated abandoning standardized testing. Do you think standardized tests should be eliminated? Why or why not? Do you think more care is needed for how test results are used?
- In recent years, test results have been used in helping to determine the value of real estate. That is, homes often sell for more in school districts where the test results are high. Do you think this is appropriate? Why or why not? Do you think test scores reflect the quality of a school and its teachers? Why or why not?
- You have just received the results from a recent series of standardized tests. The results are reported as a number of different types of scores. Which type of score(s) do you think is the best way to convey the results to your students and to their parents? Why? How will you handle situations where the students scored very poorly?
- Technology has enabled students to take standardized tests on the computer. What are the strengths of using technology in this way? What are the weaknesses? As a student, would you prefer taking a paper and pencil test or a computerized version of the test? Why?
